We could fill a page, but most of the research in the United States, 1800-present, they are the best of the best:

Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne IN
Detroit Public Library Burton Collection
Ellis Iceland Immigration Center
Conservation of battery in the City of New York (before Ellis Iceland Immigration)
Newberry Library in Chicago (which a private library, so you have to pay to use, but it is wonderful)
The National Archives and Records Administration regional centers (you can search http://www.archives.gov) closer
New York Public Library
Mack and the father of all of San Luis National Archives, Military and Federal Employee Center Records Center. The Public Library of St. Louis also has a large collection of discs in the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase, the trips, which starts west of St. Louis, and the exploration of the Mississippi River.
In every state there is a State Library and Archives of the State. They have the most entries in each country are available, but in one placeLocation. The Library of Michigan and the State Library of Illinois are the dream of many researchers.

I personally like the State Library of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.
